White Bordeaux, Sancerre & Poor Man's Chassagne from Kermit
2008 Chateau Graville-Lacoste Graves @ $18.95 per bottle or $200 per case of 12
Sauvignon Blanc is hit and miss - actually mostly miss. It needs really great terroir (Sancerre), a highly ambitious winemaker/vigneron (Didier Dagueneau, R.I.P.) and/or the civilizing influence of Semillon (White Bordeaux). More than $20 I'm either getting a really good Sancerre (see below) or I'm heading to the white Burg (also see below) or Riesling aisle. Hervé Dubourdieu's comically underpriced Chateau Graville-Lacoste, as you may have guessed I would say, possesses all three characteristics and then some. Read More:>>
2007 Philippe Colin Bourgogne Blanc @ $21 per bottle or $227 per case of 12
Younger vines, bottom slope Chassagne-Montrachet + a top Chardonnay grower/producer in Montrachet + same vinification and elevage as his 1er Cru Chassagne = affordable White Burgundy bliss.
2007 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre @ $30 per bottle or $324 per case of 12
If ever there was a Grand Cru Sauvignon Blanc vineyard, this would be it. Focused, precise and utterly harmonious with perfect pitch and quietly but persistently mineral like nobody's business. Still considerably cheaper than anything in its class.
