Roots Recap
It's nice when the wines outperform the salesy hyperbole. It was such a treat to taste the wines side-by-side. This Chris Berg guy has quite the touch. I'm not sure I've tasted Oregon Pinot Noir as luminous and quietly revealing of site as these. And I've never seen a happier Frenchman drinking American Pinot Noir. Stupid inexpensive given the quality/personality of the wine. Read More:>>

back to top Houde to open Big Guns from Ordoñez 07 Clio, 07 Alto Moncayo
SATURDAY 3 - 5pm. Robert Houde is opening a bunch of new releases from Jorge Ordoñez including the always hard-to-get, even in a recession, Clio 2007. We have 9 six packs and 5 bottles to sell. Wonder what all the fuss is about? Taste it with Robert Houde this Saturday. First come, first served. Also on the docket, 2007 Alto Moncayo Estate and Veraton (Chris Ringland's better-than-most-of-his-Aussie-stuff old-vine Garnachas) and the 2007 Juan Gil, which is smoking right out of the gate this year. From de Grazia, my Rosso di Montalcino of the vintage, the 2007 Uccelliera. And lots more:>>

back to top Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2007: I'm in.
Roasted limestone scree, wild thyme, campfire, kirsch-y Grenache (mostly), Syrah, Mourvedre from Louis Barrol. $37. A case study in Rhone GSM for those who can't justify dropping $75 and up on Chateauneuf from a potentially classic vintage. Read More:>>
back to top Joey Tensley Goes National. Uh oh.
In other Candid news, the word is out on Joey Tensley, the single-vineyard Syrah specialist from Santa Barbara that Damien's company represents in Chicago. Wine Speculator just ranked Joey Tensley's Colson Canyon 2007 quite high (22) on its recently published Top 100 spank list. And to make matters worse, Robert Parker gave the wine 95 points in the August edition of The Wine Advocate. We still think the 2006 Colson is drinking WAY better right now, but lest you miss out entirely on the now highly sought-after 2007 Colson Canyon, Damien has graciously made a limited amount available to us now. Same price as the 2006. $39. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely an amazing Tensley Syrah lurking in the 2007 -- Joey thinks it's the best Syrah he's made --, but inferring from what a great place the 2006 is in now and having tasted the 2007 a few weeks ago, you ought to sit on it for at least
a year if you really want to maximize its awesomeness. Read More:>>
